What is Off-Page SEO?

Backlinks are what we all want. They’re what we strive for every day, what every link building campaign aims to achieve. But what are backlinks? How do we get them? And what happens when we don’t get what we want from our link building endeavors?

– what are backlinks

Backlinks are links that point towards a certain website, giving it what some call “link juice” by increasing its PageRank (PR), which means that the value of what it links to increases. Any link is a backlink, of course, but what we’re really after are high quality backlinks that will be what we need to increase SERP position.

– what is link building

Link building is what we do in order to get what we want, what everybody strives for: backlinks. And what is link building? It’s a process – an art even – what we do in order to get what we want.

– how does link building (process) work?

Let’s take the example of Wikipedia (and yes, it IS an example). In order to build links from Wikipedia pages and entries on various topics, you need first create another page or entry with links pointing towards the page of your website. That way you’ll gain something called “link equity”, what will in turn benefit what you were originally trying to promote. Now, what happens if the people who run Wikipedia decide to remove your page or entry and all its links? There goes all that link equity – what’s left is only “link juice” flowing towards other websites and pages which don’t have one single link pointing towards yours…

– what are examples of backlinks

There’re many examples of good, high quality backlinks: a blog commenting on some article published on another website; submitting content to social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Delicious or StumbleUpon; putting up a press release on PRWeb (or any other reputable online press release distributor) for them to distribute across their network of media outlets; there’re even services what help you submit your website to directories what will link back towards what you’re promoting.

– what are bad examples of backlinks

There are many kinds of backlinks what can be categorized as “spammy”: submitting your website to online directories without adding some value (meaning something more than just a description and a link); putting up low quality content on other websites what is similar to what you promote; joining type-in traffic exchanges in order to get tons of links pointing towards pages what serve ads – they’re bad not because they don’t work, but because they won’t get you anywhere with Google Panda or Penguin updates…

– how do I know if my site has high quality backlinks?

You should always give what we call “value” what you link to: if the site is not what you want to promote, why would you link towards it? It’s also what we call a “contextual link”: your content what links back towards what you’re promoting should mention what you’re promoting – if it doesn’t, what are all those links good for? They won’t do anything for your SEO campaign.

– what helps me get high quality backlinks

Doing what’s called inbound marketing will help a lot. That means creating and publishing useful content on websites that have already lots of visitors what kind of look like they could be interested in what you offer. Of course, this will take time, but at least then people will create backlinks what will help your SEO campaign instead of hurting it.
